Arsenal Supporters Trust slam club's decision not to fully renew fans' silver membership next season

Arsenal Supporters Trust slam club’s failure to fully renew fans’ £59 silver membership for next season without further cost and call on chief executive Vinai Venkatesham to do the ‘fair thing’ and roll fees forward

  • Arsenal’s silver membership allows fans priority access to matchday tickets
  • But just two games have taken place with fans at Emirates Stadium this term
  • An email said membership would not be fully renewed for those who paid £59
  • But chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has been urged to reverse the decision

Arsenal fans have condemned the club’s decision to not renew fans’ silver membership fees for the 2021/22 season.

The Gunners’ silver membership grants supporters priority access to purchase matchday tickets, and costs £59.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has meant the perk of attending games this season has largely been restricted, with just two matches at the Emirates Stadium this term – namely against Rapid Vienna and Burnley – being played in front of fans.

An email from Arsenal sent to silver members said the club would not fully renew supporters who paid the full fee as they had received ‘several benefits’, including a 10 per cent discount for the online store as well as a monthly newsletter.

But now the Arsenal Supports Trust have responded with a letter addressed to chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, urging him to do the ‘fair thing’ and roll silver members’ fees forward to next season.

‘We are writing with regard to the silver membership status of Arsenal fans for the season 2020/21,’ the letter said.

‘Many supporters have paid in full for their membership for the season. The cost of a full silver membership is £59.

‘Some of these payments are a result of direct debits being taken and others the result of supporters being optimistic earlier in the season that tickets would be available at some point.

‘It is now clear that there will be no opportunity for silver members to use the principle benefit of this membership – the opportunity to purchase a ticket – in the 2020/21 season.

‘The AST is therefore requesting that the club now allow all silver memberships for the season 2020/21 to roll forward their membership to 2021/22 without any additional payment.

‘This would be the fair thing to do and we believe an early announcement would be positive news for many supporters who are seeking to manage their finances in this difficult period.

‘We look forward to your response so that we may communicate it to the many silver members in the AST.’
