Arsenal transfer round-up: Gunners considering swoop for Aston Villa midfielder

Arsenal were brought down to earth again by the defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday after their back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Manchester City in the FA Cup semi final.

It was a defeat that once again highlighted the need for the Gunners to strengthen and reinforce their squad over the summer window.

Speculation continues to swirl over who Arsenal could target before the start of the 2020/21 season, although there is still a great deal of uncertainty over how much money the North London club will have to spend on new players.

Here are three of today’s biggest and most intriguing Arsenal transfer stories.

Arsenal consider move for Villa midfielder

Douglas Luiz has impressed for Aston Villa this season

Arsenal are weighing up whether to make a move for Douglas Luiz, with Manchester City also interested in the Aston Villa midfielder.

90min claims City have a buyback clause in Luiz’s contract having only sold the Brazilian to Aston Villa last summer and could now lure the player back to the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola looks to reshape his squad this summer.

However, it’s believed that Arsenal are also interested in Luiz, with Mikel Arteta familiar with the player having watched him rise through the ranks during his time at Manchester City as Guardiola’s assistant manager.

The former Vasco de Gama midfielder has shone for Aston Villa this season despite Dean Smith’s side still fighting for Premier League survival heading into the final fixture of the 2019/20 campaign.

Coutinho ‘more open’ to signing for Arsenal

Barcelona flop Philippe Coutinho is “more open” to the idea of signing for Arsenal this summer after receiving an endorsement from the club’s technical director Edu.

The Brazilian playmaker has struggled since leaving Liverpool in January 2018, with Coutinho loaned out to Bayern Munich from Barcelona last summer.

Philippe Coutinho’s future is very much up in the air

Despite impressing in spells for the Bundesliga champions, they refused to sign Coutinho on a permanent basis, meaning the 28-year-old is once again available on the market this summer as Barca attempt to move him on.

Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) claim Coutinho is clear on his desire to return to the Premier League for the 2020/21 season and that Arsenal are the club showing the most interest in the former Liverpool man.

Arsenal closing in on Sporting teenager

Arsenal are edging closer to the signing of Joelson Fernandes from Sporting, with the 17-year-old still to sign a new contract with the Portuguese club.

It was reported a number of weeks ago that the promising teenager would put pen to paper on a new contract with Sporting, but there has been no sign since of that happening, opening the door for the Gunners to move in.

A Bola (via HITC) claim Arsenal held talks with Joelson as recently as Wednesday, with the 17-year-old compared to Cristiano Ronaldo in the way he plays the game.

It’s reported the North London club would be willing to pay the youngster’s £41million release clause and could get the deal done at any time, with negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting expected to be straightforward.
