Birmingham now has the highest number of coronavirus cases anywhere in the country outside of London.

London, branded a coronavirus hotspot, has 3,919 positive cases.

In the latest figures released by Public Health England and dated Thursday March 26, it was revealed that Birmingham now has 290 cases of Covid-19.

Ranked by upper tier local authorities in England outside of the capital, Hampshire is behind Birmingham with 267 cases.

This is followed by Sheffield where the number of cases rose to 240, the highest in Yorkshire.

Other major cities have fewer people who have tested positive, with 72 confirmed cases in Liverpool, 67 in Leeds, 55 in Manchester and just four in Hull.

Across the UK, the number of patients testing positive has risen to 11,658 with the death toll jumping to 578.

Public Health England confirmed 107 more patients had died in the UK after testing positive for Covid-19.

Nearly all the deaths continue to be among those with underlying health conditions, Birmingham Live reports.

Broken down by UK region, England has 9,782 cases, Scotland has 894 cases, there have been 741 people who have tested positive in Wales and Northern Ireland has 241 cases.

The government has been slammed over a lack of testing – making the true picture tough to deduce.
