Later in the week, Kheerat had second thoughts about lying to Ben and came clean about his relationship with Sharon – before ending things.

He then went home to make things right with his mum Suki – but it was too late.

“Mum, I know you’re angry with me and I’m sorry for the way I talked to you – it was disrespectful,” he says.

“That thing with Sharon is over now, because there is nothing in this world more important to me than this family and I know you feel the same.

“So can we just put it behind us and move on? We need to stick together for Jags, for Habiba whatever you think of her – and their son.”

But it was revealed how Suki was sitting sobbing in the dark – and not simply ignoring her son.

She said: “The prison chaplain called me ten minutes ago. Your brother was attacked in his cell. He’s dead. Jags is dead.”

Fans are in tears over the scenes.

One wrote: “I’m so sad. He was a great character who was underappreciated and pushed to the side-lines by his family.”

A second said: “Awwww nooo I loved Jags!”

Another added: “Rip Jags you will be missed!”

EastEnders continues Friday 7:45pm on BBC One.
