I can’t stop thinking ‘what if?’ after catching a glimpse of my ex

DEAR DEIDRE: I KEEP wondering what might have been after recently seeing a girl from my past. I remembered saying goodbye and wished I hadn’t been such an idiot.

Ten years ago I had what I thought would be a one-night stand. She was funny, smart and gorgeous. We had drunken hook-ups but she wanted something more.

We usually answer within 24 hours and always change details to protect identities.

The Dear Deidre team advises and assists people FREE, in an age when counselling sessions cost £50 and funding for support is at an all-time low.

I was scared to get into a relationship, as my previous one had ended badly.

I asked her to be my girlfriend but she thought I wasn’t for real and it fizzled out.

My current relationship feels like going through the motions. I’m thinking: “What if?”

Is it because I genuinely had feelings for her or am I longing to be young and free again? I’m a man of 32.

DEIDRE SAYS: Be very careful. I would guess you are feeling nostalgic because life is not going so well in your current relationship.

Maybe you could do with rediscovering more romance with your girlfriend. My support pack Your Relationship MOT can help with that.

If you can’t make it work, you would be best off ending it – not that you should immediately rush into something with the girl from your past either.
