Jack Tweed has revealed he lied about his age when he first met Jade Goody.
The Big Brother star’s widower admitted he put an extra five years on top of his age when they first met in an Essex club so that she wouldn’t be scared off.
Speaking about their relationship, he said: “We met in a nightclub just round the corner in Essex. Then we didn’t speak for a while and then we met in the same club again. I put on an extra five years to my age, yeah.”
Jack said he was too young to watch Jade, who was six years older, while she was first in the Big Brother house in 2002.
He told GMB presenters Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley that he had no idea of the extent of ‘abuse’ she received.
After watching a Channel 4 documentary on her life, he said: “Watching the programme yesterday, I didn’t watch the first big Brother, so I didn’t know how much.
“I knew she got abused, but I didn’t realise to the extreme of what theywere calling her and how bad it really was. That was a bit of a shock.”
Jack believes Jade, who he married in 2009 shortly before her death, had a thick skin and was determined to work hard to provide for her sons.
On how she took the criticism, he admitted: “She had a really thick skin she could take a lot but the main worries for her was that she didn’t want to say the wrong things and her whole life stopped and she stopped earning money for the boys and everyone hated her, she didn’t want that.
“That was her main goal. Everything she worked towards was for her boys and to give the boys a good upbringing, because of what she never had. That was the only thing she used to say ‘I didn’t have the best childhood’. So I want my boys to have the best they can get, … with love and everything not just money, the whole upbringing.”
The second episode of Channel 4 documentary Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain focuses on Jack and Jade’s relaitonship.
He confessed he still isn’t ready to move on from Jade as “no one else compares”.
Jack added: “I’m alright, I just get by, you know what I mean, I just get on with it.
“But yes, I haven’t met anyone. I don’t feel like I could meet anyone yet, as no one really compares to Jade, so I don’t want to put that person… It’s not fair on a person to put them through that.”
