Manchester United could receive a boost in their bid to sign Jadon Sancho – from former Old Trafford flop Memphis Depay.
United have made Sancho their top target this summer – although it remains to be seen whether the Premier League side will match Borussia Dortmund’s £109million price tag for the winger.
But the Red Devils could be helped out by their former player Depay, who Dortmund are reportedly lining up as a replacement for Sancho.
Depay joined United from PSV Eindhoven in a £30m deal in 2015, and was given the iconic No7 shirt previously worn by club legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Dutch winger managed just two league goals in a season and a half before being shipped off to Lyon for £14m in 2017.
Since then, however, Depay has enjoyed something of a resurgence, having scored nine goals in Ligue 1 and five in the Champions League this season.
And Dortmund are eyeing a £40m move to recruit the 26-year-old as Sancho’s successor, according to Bild.
The German publication says Depay is looking for a move after Lyon finished seventh in the French top flight this season, missing out on the Champions League.
And if Dortmund are preparing to replace Sancho, that has to be good news for United – unless of course, reports are to be believed that the 20-year-old prefers a move to Liverpool.
According to German publication Kicker, Sancho would rather sign for Jurgen Klopp’s side because they have a much greater chance of winning silverware in 2021.
But United fans were given hope that Sancho was still headed for Old Trafford when the England ace posted a picture of himself alongside Marcus Rashford on Instagram on Thursday.
The photo of Sancho and United striker Rashford lined up together in England shirts was captioned “If we’re all on the same team, we’ll never be defeated.”
Sancho, who has scored 34 goals in 99 games for Dortmund since joining them from Manchester City in 2017, was also pictured on Thursday relaxing on a private jet headed to an unknown location.
He was pictured alongside former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom in the snap shared on Instagram.
Sancho scored 17 goals and posted 17 assists in 32 Bundesliga games for Dortmund this season.
