My brother and sister are accusing me of killing our dad

DEAR DEIDRE: MY brother and sister are accusing me of killing our dad because he died of Covid.

I’m 45 and a single woman and I work in a care home.

Mum is on my side and says it breaks her heart that we’ve fallen out

My dad sadly passed away last year with Covid being put on his death certificate, but he was 85 and had other illnesses, which made him very vulnerable.

I’d been renting a house next door to my parents so that I could help look after Dad. My brother and sister live miles away.

When Covid hit, we were ultra careful. I never went into Mum and Dad’s home after lockdown.

Nobody had it in the residential home where I worked before my dad caught it.

My siblings are now saying that it is my fault Dad isn’t here any longer.

They turned against Mum, saying she didn’t call an ambulance quickly enough.

It’s turned our family on its head. Mum is on my side and says it breaks her heart that we’ve fallen out.

DEIDRE SAYS: Losing any loved one is stressful and sadly, can bring out the worst in people.

Your siblings are hurting just as you and your mum are, but they are looking for somebody to blame.

What happened to your dad was nobody’s fault.

Find some quiet time to talk with your siblings and explain how upset your mum is. Suggest you all see a bereavement counsellor.

You can find counselling through sueryder.org.uk, which offers six free sessions.
