Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plan to rotate Man Utd stars in Europa League

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering resting key players during the Europa League knockout stage.

Manchester United are highly likely to be headed to Germany next weekend for the final rounds of the competition, which will be played as a mini tournament involving eight teams over 11 days.

The Red Devils manager can certainly afford to name an inventive line-up for the second leg of their last-16 tie against Austrian side LASK at Old Trafford, as they are already 5-0 up on aggregate.

But Solskjaer is also keen to preserve the fitness of some of his senior players ahead of the start of the new Premier League season on 12 September, Manchester Evening News has learned.

United, fellow Europa League participants Wolves and Champions League contenders Manchester City and Chelsea could be granted a delayed start depending on how far they progress.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks some of his players could do with a rest

Solskjaer is apparently taking no chances with his plans for the upcoming campaign and has given the entire first team a week off in the run-up to their meeting with LASK on Wednesday.

United can expect to reach a quarter-final against Copenhagen or Istanbul Basaksehir five days later, with a semi-final against Wolves, Olympiacos, Sevilla or Roma scheduled for 16 August.

The Europa League final will be staged in Cologne on 21 August, leaving a potential gap of only three weeks between seasons if Solskjaer’s side make it that far in Europe’s second competition.

Solskjaer is believed to be concerned about the amount of playing time certain important members of his squad were subjected to after the Premier League came out of lockdown.

Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes started 11 games in the space of 37 days, with Maguire playing every minute and Fernandes almost all of them with 1,046 minutes under his belt.

Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford started in the last nine league matches.
