Outlander season 6: Caitriona Balfe admits she ‘pushed for more intimate’ moments

Outlander has become known for its racy scenes between much-loved couple Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and his wife, time-traveller Claire (Caitriona Balfe). Over the seasons, fans have come to know their relationship on an intimate level with the pair unashamed of their love for one another. Even after sending 20 years apart, the couple still have the same sizzling chemistry as when they were newly-weds in seasons one and two. Reflecting on the series, Caitriona has revealed she “pushed for” more intimate scenes for the couple.

While many viewers have questioned the inclusion of so many sex and sexual attack scenes, the cast have always defended them.

Caitriona in particular, has been vocal about how important it is for viewers to see sex shown from the female gaze, not just the mens.

She’s also been keen to show the progression of Claire as she ages, with season five addressing the menopause.

As a result, viewers have seen Claire and Jamie grow closer as they continue to learn about one another as they grow and adapt.

“It’s a double-edged sword because of course, we want great material and something that really challenges you, but it’s really tough stuff and not something you relish doing or going through, especially when you’re so protective of your character.”

Caitriona admitted she asked if it was really necessary to include the attack but it was “part of Claire’s journey”.

“What I’m interested in is how we continue on from this and explore her recovery, because that’s incredibly important,” she added.

Claire will have more than just her recovery to deal with in season six as the American Revolutionary War approaches while new settlers will also be arriving on Fraser’s Ridge.

One of those who is set to arrive is Malva Christie. Fans of the Outlander novels know Claire takes Malva under her wing and trains her as an apprentice.

However, things go awry when Malva poisons Claire and her father Tom Christie, before claiming Jamie is the father of her unborn child.

Fans will have to wait to see if writers stick to the same storyline in the series as in the books but it’s certain there will be plenty for Claire to deal with.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Starz and Amazon Prime Video now.
