Rio Ferdinand has identified three positions Manchester United need to target for recruitment in order to challenge for the Premier League title.
United overturned an early deficit to dominate Bournemouth with a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon and extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 16 matches.
While the result saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side leapfrog Chelsea into the top four, United remain 31 points behind champions Liverpool.
And Ferdinand believes his former side needs to recruit fresh options in three positions in order to close the gap on their north-west rivals.
“United need a centre-back with pace, a midfielder who understands defensive positioning and a player to rival the front three,” the United icon told BT Sport .
Explaining why United need a fast centre-back to partner Harry Maguire, Ferdinand admitted that turn of speed is an area where the Englishman is lacking.
The 27-year-old was bought from Leicester City for £80million last summer – a world record fee for a defender.
He was awarded the club captaincy by Solskjaer in January and has made 46 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring three goals.
Elsewhere, Ferdinand believes United need a ball-winning midfielder to compete with Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic for a role in United’s midfield alongside Paul Pogba.
And to complete Solskjaer’s squad rebuild, a player capable of pushing Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford for a starting role is needed.
Current stand-in forward options include Odion Ighalo and Daniel James, but Ferdinand believes another quality player is needed to ensure United have the depth required to become Premier League champions.
United remain linked with a move for Jack Grealish, though the Aston Villa captain is expected to cost up to £80million and such fees may not be feasible amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The Red Devils are also unwilling to improve on their £50million offer for Jadon Sancho, with Borussia Dortmund holding out for £115million.
