Robbie Savage fumed at BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey in a rant over whether Leicester City need ‘a rebuild’.
Savage said he was “angry” at being asked the question by Humphrey after the Foxes were knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea on Sunday.
Leicester are currently third in the Premier League and heading for a Champions League place, having reached the Caraboa Cup semi-finals as well as the FA Cup quarter-finals this season.
However, they have failed to score in five of their last eight matches and rarely threatened Chelsea.
Talking to former Foxes midfielder Savage on BT Sport after the game, Humphrey referenced an interview in which a fan had said Brendan Rodgers’ side needed to reinvest – with teams such as Wolves and Sheffield United catching up on the Premier League’s leading lights.
And the presenter was promptly savaged by Savage..
“When you said ‘Do Leicester need a rebuild’ I almost fell off my chair,” the former Wales star blasted at Humphrey.
“They’re third in the Premier League, they got to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, they’ve just got knocked out of the semi-final of the FA cup.
“The average age of the squad is early 20s. They had three players over the age of 30 – Schmeichel, Vardy and Jonny Evans. It’s a very young squad. And you’re saying do they need a rebuild? It’s nonsense. They are third in the Premier League!”
Sheffield United also crashed out of the FA Cup on Sunday, losing 2-1 at home to Arsenal following on from Premier League defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle.
Before those results the Blades had been fifth in the league, and Savage said criticism of Chris Wilder’s side was just as unwarranted as questions about Leicester’s form.
“This is what I mean – people are now questioning Chris Wilder and Sheffield United, and they’re eighth in the Premier League. FA Cup quarter-final, it’s absolute nonsense.”
Returning to the subject of his former club – who won the 2015/16 Premier League title – Savage went on: “Rebuild, Leicester? Jake, they’re having one of their best seasons ever.
“They might drop out of the Champions League places. Leicester City, 5000/1 premier league winners and people say rebuilds. Do me a favour.”
Humphrey then asked whether the Foxes needed to reinvest this summer, to which Savage replied: “All teams need to reinvest.
” Liverpool will probably need to reinvest. They’re going to have one of the best Premier League seasons ever. They may even break all the records.
“They are third in the Premier League, Leicester City. Let that sink in for a second. They’re ahead of Spurs, Manchester United, they’re ahead of Chelsea.”
Savage added: “They don’t have to rebuild. I get fed up of people saying do they need a rebuild. It’s nonsense. It made me angry that.”
The 45-year-old’s rant at least amused fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand.
The former Manchester United and England defender joked: “Sav’s not been given any dessert.”
