Football ace Marcus Rashford and Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid paid tribute to the 17-year-old as an “absolute superstar”.

Less than 15 hours before his family announced his death, Alex posted on Twitter that he’d had a “great time”.

“Going in for a life-saving procedure,” he said.

“If it don’t work, then it’s been a great time people. Thank you for all you’ve done for me.”

But his sister then informed devastated followers he had died as “his heart couldn’t take it any more.”

He lost his life after a seven-hour procedure, she said. Alex has suffered heart problems for some time, and was hospitalised awaiting a transplant.

Posting on his account, she wrote: “Heaven gained another angel. He was my rock, my everything.”

His sister, who didn’t want to be named, told The Sun Online that her brother told her to look after their mum.

She said: “It’s like as if he knew he was not going to make it. He said ‘promise me you’ll take care of [mum] and of yourself and move on’.”

His sister said he was a “special one”.

“When I had him I wouldn’t need to worry or go to anyone else, I would just forget,” she said.

“The last couple of days have been very hard, he was in hospital and his death just happened unexpectedly.”

Alex’s sister said she has been overwhelmed by the support she has received since her brother’s death.

She said: “As soon as I went on Twitter, the same way they supported him now they’re supporting me with their words, so many nice words, condolences – I feel like I’m him now.”

EMOTIONAL TRIBUTES

Sharing a photo of Alex holding his book, Rashford said: “My guy.

“I hope this book brought you at least a little enjoyment at the end.

“What an absolute superstar, fought until the very end. I was always thankful of your support.”

Susanna Reid then shared Rashford’s tweet – and said: “This breaks my heart.”

Alex regularly updated followers on his condition, and posted videos from his hospital bed to Facebook and YouTube.

On June 5, he thanked followers for their support – and told them: “I’m going to give it my best shot and I won’t let nothing stop me.”

Teachers at his former school, Cockshut Hill in Birmingham, are among those to pay tribute after news of his death was announced – and said the news came as a “great sadness” to them.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult and sad time,” they said.

Others have taken to Twitter and YouTube to pay their respects to an “absolute legend”.

One said: “You were the bravest person I’ve ever met.

“Even though you were going through you so much you were so caring and loving. You had so much love for life and your family… I’m so sorry.

“Heaven gained an absolutely beautiful person today.”

Another told Alex’s sister: “Your brother had the most beautiful soul.

“The most selfless and genuine kid I’ve ever spoken to who always looked out for others.

“May Alex rest in peace, he’ll never be forgotten.”

A third said: “Alex was such a genuine and kind hearted person, the way he stayed positive throughout all this was absolutely inspirational.

“He will be remembered as a valiant warrior.”

Meanwhile, supporters are continuing to donate to a GoFundMe page initially set up after Alex’s mum had to quit her job in order to support him.
