Spain and the EU cannot bear political freedom and that proves voting for Brexit was the right choice

FASCISM is back in Spain, more than 40 years after dictator General Franco mercifully popped his clogs.

There are riots on the streets of Barcelona and the police are arresting everyone they see.

Catalonia wants independence from Spain’s basket-case economy. Its people voted for independence.

The Spanish government — with the support of the European Union — decided that vote was “illegal”. They arrested the leaders of the Catalan independence movement.

They have now sentenced nine of them to prison terms of between ten and 13 years. Simply for organising a referendum on their country’s freedom.

But the Spanish, and the EU, cannot bear political freedom. The former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is holed up in Brussels.

He said: “This Europe dances to the sound of the Spanish state, which prevents the representatives of more than two million European citizens from sitting in the European Parliament.”

That’s why what is happening in Spain is of deadly importance to what is happening to us in the UK.

LOATHING OF DEMOCRACY

When parts of the UK, such as Scotland, fancy a bit of independence, we don’t arrest Nicola Sturgeon and shove her in prison for 13 years.

We let them have a proper referendum and vow to respect the outcome.

Spain wouldn’t have been able to get away with its actions were it not for the EU. And the EU cannot abide democracy.

It has connived with the Spanish government all the way through this dispute. It cheered when the Catalan leaders were arrested.

But that’s not all.

The EU does not respect democracy in any of its member states, unless it happens to coincide with EU policy.

It has mercilessly bullied the governments of both Poland and Hungary because they enacted legislation of which the Brussels bureaucrats did not approve.

MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE

It warned Austria that if its people chose the wrong president, the country would be penalised by the EU. It bullied the left-wing Syriza government in Greece.

On my way to the polling station three years ago, I was in two minds as to what way I should vote.

It seemed to me that both the Remain and Leave sides had good arguments to commend them.

In the end I voted Leave because of a nagging worry. And that worry was about the increasing political power of the European Union and its evident loathing of democracy.

Thank the Lord, for once in my life I made the right choice.

Everything that has happened in the EU over the past three years has made it crystal clear that we are better off outside this cumbersome, meddlesome organisation.

From the way it reacted to our Brexit vote, via the dictatorial attitudes towards governments with which it disagrees, to the burning streets of Barcelona.

Brexit has become hideously boring.

None of us knows what the hell is going to happen two or three days from now. Most of us just want the whole thing over.

But if ever you have a doubt that Brexit was exactly the right decision — just take a long, hard look at the EU today. And know, beyond all doubt, that we made the right choice.

Lew’s oil wrong

THE latest woke and mega-rich celebrity to tell you how to live your life is Lewis Hamilton.

He has told us that we should all become vegan in order to save the planet.

Yes, this is a man who drives cars for a living. Cars which spew out more hydrocarbons than a transatlantic jumbo jet.

And whose wealth comes from his sponsors such as Petronas, the giant Malaysian oil firm.

And who usually travels to his races in a private plane. And Lewis thinks all of this is offset by the fact he only eats chives, or something.

Hell, I think if Hamilton gave up his day job – and maybe took the Tube occasionally – climate change would immediately go into reverse.

His lifestyle couldn’t be more damaging to the environment if he ran an enormous factory which minced polar bears into cat food.

WITLESS SLEBS

Don’t these witless slebs realise how stupid and hypocritical they appear? It’s like being told to stay away from drugs by Keith Richards.

Lewis has said sometimes he feels so depressed about the damage to the planet he feels like “giving it all up”.

What, mate – the money and the success?

Yeah. Sure.

Big cities can't think straight

A NEW study suggests that people who live in heavily polluted areas suffer terrible brain-related problems.

They can’t think straight. They don’t remember stuff like the rest of us can.

Maybe that’s why our most polluted big cities – London, Glasgow, Liverpool – voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU.

They wandered down to the polling station on June 23, 2016 with all these horrible chemicals addling their brains.

She’d Ava my vote

EVER get the feeling that our politicians are lacking a certain something?

Do you look abroad and think: Ooh, I wish we could have the sort of MPs THEY have? Such as Croatia, for example.

This is Ava Karabatic, a former Playboy model, who is running to be president of the country. Not sure what her policies are. Not entirely sure I care.

I did root out some decidedly odd quotes from the woman, though.

These include: “I give my parents a lot of greetings, especially Mom and Dad.” And “Although my stay in Costa Rica was honey and milk, I got terrible haemorrhoids because of sleeping on bamboo.”

Crazy gal, huh? Still, prefer her to our lot.

Sofia’s shamed by few

LIKE Raheem Sterling, I feel a little bit sorry for the Bulgarians.

They get absolutely stuffed 6-0 at home by England.

And then they’re revealed to the world as the most racist scumbags ever to walk this Earth.

The England players behaved magnificently in Sofia.

And it is right that the contingent of low-browed Neanderthals making foul monkey chants were kicked out the ground. But they were a minority.

And isn’t it racist to blame an entire country for the actions of a few?

Poll lot of grief

YOU think things are going to get better regarding Brexit? Well, I hope you’re right.

I think they’re going to get a whole bunch worse.

It seems our only choice will be between a deal cooked up by Theresa May and reheated in a microwave by Boris Johnson or no Brexit

Deadline day approaches. And it seems to me that our choice will be between a deal cooked up by Theresa May and reheated in a faulty microwave oven by Boris Johnson. Or no Brexit.

That’s not a great choice, is it?

And either way there’s worse further down the line. The polls put the Tories ahead by eight points and Labour desperately struggling on 26 per cent.

But that’s misleading.

BETRAYED BY MPs

Labour doesn’t need to win many more seats to form a coalition government with the SNP and Lib Dems. If there’s a November general election then that’s exactly what I expect will happen.

Still, at least it should be evident to all voters that the current parliamentary set-up is not fit for purpose.

We have been betrayed by our MPs, and the two main parties are on the verge of self-destructing.

Not a fair race

FEMALE athletes given injections of testosterone perform much better than other women, a new study has found.

Men produce lots of testosterone, which is one of the reasons they are a lot better at sports.

It’s against the rules for women to inject themselves with testosterone before a race. So a transgender woman already has a good head start.

Believe me, we are seeing a growing threat to women’s sports, with transgender people taking first place in an increasing number of disciplines.

Doesn’t seem remotely fair to me.

Ban is monu-mental

STUDENTS, huh. Latest thing is they want to ban a statue at the University of Manchester.

Because it’s raaaaacccisst.

University of Manchester students want to ban a planned statue of Mahatma Gandhi

The planned statue is of Mahatma Gandhi, a pacifist who fought for Indian independence. But they hate Gandhi because he had a colonial attitude towards black people, apparently.

Nobody, anywhere, is good enough for these moronic snowflakes.

Anybody, past or present, who transgresses any of their fatuous beliefs has to be banned.
